Ida Lou Nelson Cavett died peacefully at her home on July 17, 2023.
She was a lifelong Jacksonian, the daughter of Louise Taylor Nelson Boal and Fred Langley Nelson. She grew up in the Belhaven neighborhood on Fairview Street. Mrs. Cavett was educated in the Jackson Public Schools, having attended Power, Bailey, and graduated from Central High School in 1955. Keeping the class together and in touch was one of her fondest pleasures. She delighted in putting out the "LOOP", a monthly newsletter, to her CHS classmates, which she faithfully provided for 10 years. She served on the CHS Reunion committee for 60 years. She furthered her education attending Stephens College and Ole Miss. She was a proud member of Chi Omega Sorority.
Mrs. Cavett was a member of many Civic, Social, and Patriotic organizations during her active years. She was also a member of the Debutante Club of MS, and a member of the Junior League of Jackson.
Mrs. Cavett was an active member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church her entire life.
She enjoyed Genealogy; researched and wrote several family histories, including several booklets. She also created a family cookbook for her children and grandchildren which was filled with favorite family recipes, stories, and helpful hints.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woods B. Cavett; brother, Fred Langley Nelson, Jr. and sister, Martha Nelson Gordon. Survivors include her three sons and their wives: Clay (Laura) Cavett of Oxford, Fred (Sandi) Cavett of Jackson, and Woods (Tavia) Cavett of Madison, seven grandchildren, John (Ginny) Cavett of Hoover, AL, Madeline Cavett of Oxford; Caroline Cavett of Jackson; Tay, Lucy, Nash, and Duncan Cavett of Madison, and two great grandsons, Harry and Wyatt Cavett of Hoover, AL., a sister-in-law Caroline Bradley Cavett of Lookout Mountain, TN, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as a host of "Forever Friends".
A Visitation will be held at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church Parlor on July 21, 2023, from 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm, with a Memorial Service to follow in the Sanctuary at 2:00.
The family suggests memorials to Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church, 305 N. Congress St, Jackson, MS, 39201 or the Ole Miss Alumni Association.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the outstanding team of caregivers that provided kindness and comfort to Mrs. Cavett.
