He grew up on St. Ann Street in the Belhaven district and attended Power Elementary School, Bailey Jr. High and Jackson Central High School and for the last 72 years of his life was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. At Jackson Central he was a Tackle on the perennial Big Eight Champion Tiger football squad, President of the "Dirty Thirty" Club, and was in the ROTC. His prophetic senior class description in the 1952 Cotton Boll yearbook said "This handsome football player is the kind of fellow everyone likes. His ability and determination, combined with his pleasing personality and ready wit, will carry him far in life".
In 1952 he enrolled at the University of Mississippi and his lifelong love for Ole Miss was forever cemented. At Ole Miss he was in the ROTC and a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, where he participated in intramural sports, served as homecoming chairman and Vice President of the Mississippi Alpha chapter. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1956 and later returned to Oxford to study law earning is Juris Doctorate from the university in 1962. He reveled in the fact that during his times as an Ole Miss undergraduate and graduate student, the Rebels were a perennial top-ten team and won two football national championships.
Following the completion of his undergraduate studies, he first married Patsy then was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force, and was stationed on Cape Cod in Massachusetts and in south Texas. After he was honorably discharged he continued to serve his country for the next decade in the Air National Guard.
He returned to Jackson in 1962 to practice law and then for the next three decades had a successful career in investments and Oil & Gas. In 1991 he joined the staff of Cellular South (now C-Spire) where he was tasked by the company to establish a cellular presence in Greenville and Oxford. After helping the company to successfully corner the market in those strategic regions, he continued to work as an attorney and legal compliance officer for Telapex, C-Spire's holding company. He retired from Telapex May 1.
His love for Jackson and Mississippi were evident in his service to his community and to his state. He was a long-time supporter of the YMCA and Salvation Army and beginning with his support of Dwight Eisenhower in 1952, he was a proud member and supporter of the Republican Party. He was a charter member and Founder of River Hills Club and in 1978 to 1980 served as an officer and then President of the Club. His leadership and support were crucial to the early development of Jackson Preparatory School, serving as Sports Facts Book co-editor with Patsy then becoming Vice President then President of the Jackson Prep Booster Club. For nearly the entire decade of the 1970's he sponsored and volunteer coached the First Presbyterian Church junior high and high school basketball teams in the Jackson area church league. He enjoyed collecting political and sports buttons, accumulating an impressive collection of memorabilia. He passed that passion on to his sons.
He maintained his love and devotion for his beloved Ole Miss until the very end, even enjoying watching the Rebels' exciting victory over Arkansas just hours before his passing. He was a long time season ticket holder and was a charter and Gold Club member of the Ole Miss Loyalty Foundation, a Lifetime Member of the Ole Miss Alumni Association, member of the Chancellor's Associates and donor to his alma mater.
Most importantly, he was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and always remained proud of his immediate and extended family. Affectionately known as "Big", he never missed a game, event, play or performance of his sons and grandchildren.
