Henrietta Harris Daves Sampson, age 83, died on August 25, 2021 at Lakeland Nursing Home in Jackson, Mississippi. She was born in Greenwood, Mississippi and was preceded in death by her parents, Roy Miller and Henrietta Wilson Daves.
Henrietta attended Mississippi State College for Women where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. Following a family move to Marshfield, Wisconsin, she opened an independent bookstore called The Brass Lantern where she could foster her love of reading and writing. She eventually worked in sales, attended travel school, and ultimately returned to her true calling, teaching.
Upon her return to Mississippi, Henrietta joined St. Richard Catholic Church, where she taught religion and tutored students in reading. She also loved to create flower arrangements and plan weddings, working beside her dear friend, Raymond Berry. In later years she assisted in the aftercare program at St. Anthony Catholic School. Students, parents, and teachers remember her kind, warm spirit, patient manner and devotion to her students.
Henrietta is survived by her children: Chuck Sampson (Corinne), Betsy Patton, and Kathryn Meadors (Gram); grandchildren: Joseph Queen (Kristen), Elizabeth Henry, Ellen Saathoff (Sean), Neely Meadors, Riley Meadors, Spencer Patton and Kathleen Patton; and great grandchildren: Kennedy, Walker and Lennon Queen.
A private family service will be held at St. Richard Catholic Church followed by inurnment at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church. The family wishes to thank the loving, dedicated staff at Lakeland Nursing and Rehabilitation and HomeCare Hospice. Memorial donations may be made to Children's of Mississippi Hospital and Community Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA).
