Helen Murphy Marks died on October 1, 2024. She and her identical twin sister, Evelyn Murphy McIntyre were born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on September 15, 1925. Helen was graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Education degree from Millsaps College, where she met her husband, Sutton, to whom she was married for 74 years.
Helen was a member of Galloway United Methodist Church. She was an elementary school teacher in the Jackson and Madison Public Schools for 32 years. Helen also enjoyed tennis and was known for her "wicked" drop shot. She played with tennis friends at River Hills Club and was a member of the tennis team known as the "Hot Flashes" into her 80s. Helen also loved the beauty in gardening and mastered it for over 40 years at her Jackson home that she shared with her family. Helen was a true student of education; she loved learning about other countries and their populations, and together, she and Sutton travelled to 29 countries. In their later years, Helen and Sutton retired to St. Catherine's Village.
Helen is survived by her husband, Gordon Sutton Marks, (Jackson); her son Peter Gordon Marks, (Rondah) Jackson; her daughter Amy Ruth Marks McElroy, (Brad) Memphis. Sadly, she was predeceased by her father Charles Adolphus Murphy, her mother Sarah Hooks Murphy, daughter Victoria Evelyn Marks and by her twin sister Evelyn Murphy McIntyre.
Helen is survived by six grandchildren: Tyler Gordon Marks, (Heather) of Tupelo; Tucker Reed Marks, (Courtney) of Nashville; George Matthew Marks, (Tess) of Atlanta; Sarah McElroy Mitchell,(Jody) of Indiana; William Bradley McElroy of Memphis; and Megan McElroy Moore, (Marshall) of Atlanta.
Helen had eight great grandchildren: Eloise Brickell Marks (17), Miller Gordon Marks (15), and Sutton Elizabeth Marks (7) all of Tupelo; Carson Reed Marks (16) and Brantli Marks (9) of Nashville; George Matthew Marks, Jr. (6), Betty Virginia Marks (2) of Atlanta; and Jonas Roan Mitchell (10) and Morgan Bruce Mitchell (3) of Indiana.
A private service with immediate family will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park on Friday, October 4 at 11:00.
Helen's family shares their heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers and other staff at St. Catherine's Village. Their genuine love, attentive care and kindness was a great contribution to Helen's life and will never be forgotten by her family.
