Obituary

Giles Wendell Meacham, Sr., passed away peacefully on January 21, 2024, his 90th birthday.

Wendell was born in Hillsboro (Leiper's Fork), TN to his parents, Harold C. Meacham and Sadie Page Meacham. He was the youngest of six children. Wendell grew up on a farm where he lived until he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1955 and served as a dental technician aboard the USS Bremerton (CA-130) until 1960, when he was honorably discharged.  Wendell had many fond memories of visiting Hawaii, Japan, Australia, the Philippines, and many other locations while in the Navy.

After the Navy, Wendell moved to Mississippi, where he settled in Raymond. Shortly thereafter, he met and married Betty Lee Meacham.  Together, they had sons, Darryl and Giles. Wendell and Betty were married over 35 years until her death in 2004.

Wendell worked for UPS in building maintenance for 25 years, until his retirement. Wendell had a gift for building/fixing things and he repaired thousands of lawnmowers for the residents of Raymond and the surrounding area. After retirement, in addition to repairing lawnmowers, he took up woodworking, which he loved and spent countless hours building bird houses and many other things. Wendell served as an Alderman for the town of Raymond for 16 years.

In December of 2005, Wendell married Patsy Smith Meacham. They were married until her death in August 2023.

Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Harding, Harold "Bee," Milton, Mary and Marshall, wives Betty Lee Meacham and Patsy Smith Meacham, son Darryl Meacham.

He is survived by his sons Giles (Karen) Meacham of Clinton, MS, Guil (Susan) Ezell of Franklin, TN, Jerry (Zaiga) Torrence, daughter-in-law Kristy Meacham of Magee, MS, daughters Kimberly Mitchell and Pennie (Brent) Posey of Raymond, MS; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Nolan Meacham, Waylon Meacham, Joel Eakes, Will Eakes, Ryan Posey and Kylar Posey.

Special thanks to Grace Bennett and Kylar Posey for the care they provided Patsy and Wendell and everyone at the Corner Market/Sunflower Deli for having his sweet potatoes and baked chicken ready each day.
