Mrs. Eugenia "Jean" Johnson Glaze, 91, of Greenwood, SC, wife of Dr. A. Jackson Glaze, Jr. of Pelahatchie, MS, died Friday May 4, 2018 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Clinton, MS.
Born in Greenwood, SC on June 5, 1926, she was the daughter of the late George Luther Johnson and Alma Parkman Johnson. Mrs. Glaze was a graduate of Lander College, Greenwood, SC and Southern Baptist Seminary's Women's Missionary Training School in Louisville, KY.
Mrs. Glaze touched countless lives through her life and career. She was a religious education worker at First Baptist Church, Anderson, SC and teacher in Jefferson County, KY. She was a missionary with the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention alongside her husband from 1953-1980 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Mrs. Glaze served in churches and at her home, and taught at the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Buenos Aires. After returning from Argentina she served as a secretary in the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board from 1982-1983. She was a Spanish teacher at Hinds Community College from 1982-1984, and at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 1990-1994. She and her husband retired in Clinton where she continued her ministry to all who came in contact with them.
A devoted follower of Christ, Mrs. Glaze always sought to meet the needs of those around her. An insightful and witty conversationalist, talented artist, decorator and cook, "Jean" was known for her gift of hospitality as she welcomed and ministered to English and Spanish-speaking guests, serving meals and tea to family, friends, visiting dignitaries and Bible study groups. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family and friends will deeply miss being able to count on her to pray for and with them.
She was preceded in death by her sister Helen Ketteman Smith of Nashville, TN, and her brother George (Buddy) Johnson of Greenwood, SC.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 69 years, Dr. A. J. Glaze, and her children: David (Gloria) Glaze of Brandon, MS; Steve (Ruth) Glaze of Lynchburg,VA; Deb (Keith) Wells of Philadelphia, MS; and Tim (Laurie) Glaze of Hattiesburg, MS; also her sister Joyce (Phil) Nickles of Greenwood, SC; brother Frank (Ann Wynne) Johnson of Charleston, SC; twelve grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home is arranging funeral services at First Baptist Church Clinton, MS, on Thursday May 10. Visitation will begin at 9:30 with service to follow at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lottie Moon International Missions Offering of the Southern Baptist Convention.
