Ellen Gayl Rouse's Obituary
Ellen Gayl Rouse, 71, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.
Gayl was born in Tylertown, MS to the late Charles W. & Mila Ellzey Dunaway. As a child she developed polio, however, she did not allow it to define her life. She graduated high school, earned a B.S. degree and retired as an accountant with Mobile Comm. She was a member of Crossgates Baptist Church and a wonderful artist. Gayl engaged in all sorts of art, including gourd art, paintings and crafts. She owned and operated the Purple Paint Brush in Brandon and won awards for her talents. She was a member of the Jackson Art Guild and enjoyed sharing her passion of art by teaching it to children. She also loved singing and recording songs in the Internet karaoke community. In her later years she developed post-polio syndrome, a condition that affects 40-50 percent of polio survivors. She joined the Post Polio Group which offered her and her family support in facing the challenges of the late effects of polio. Gayl was a loving individual who loved life and strived to live it to the fullest regardless of the challenges she faced. She will be missed by all who loved and knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Johnny; stepchildren, Steven Rouse (Angie) and Kevin Rouse (Jennifer); brother, Charles Ferrell Dunaway; sisters, Sue Robin Bittle, Nancy Stribling (Roscoe), and Cherry Russell; grandchildren, Isabella and Keifer Rouse; nephews, Will Dunaway and Russell Young; niece, Becka Shields; sister-in-law and caregiver, Brenda Graham; and sisters-in-law, Lucy Slade and Patricia Reed; brother-in-law, Lavonne Rouse and many other extended family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles W. And Mila Dunaway; and brother-in-law, James Rouse.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Jimmy Jones for his compassionate care of Gayl.
Visitation will be Monday, January 8, 2018 from 11:00am - 1:00pm at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Flowood, MS. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm in the funeral home chapel with interment to follow in Lakeland Place Garden Park Cemetery, Brandon.
