Rev. Edwin L. Coyner Sr., born 1915, a retired Lutheran Pastor and resident of Clinton, MS, died Sunday September 17, 2017. Services are at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1799 Clinton-Raymond Road, and Friday, September 22nd. Visitation begins at 10:00 AM followed by the service at 11:00AM with burial in Clinton Cemetery.
Rev. Coyner graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO in 1939 and served congregations in Tennessee, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.
While serving in Vicksburg he started churches in Greenville and Natchez as well as serving other cities when vacancies occurred. When he pastored in New Orleans he also served as chaplain at the Lutheran Nursing Home and after his retirement he remained active in service by making hospital and home visits for Our Redeemer Lutheran.
Rev. Coyner served as a charter member of the Central Mississippi Alzheimer's Board organized to assist Mississippians with information on the disease as well as organizing support groups throughout the state.
He was preceded in death by his wife Fannie Herman Coyner and his son Edwin L. Coyner Jr. and is survived by one brother, Kenneth Coyner, Suffolk, VA, four daughters Judy (David) Nohra, Clinton, MS, Natalie (Dallas) Petry, Westville, IN, Mary (Mike) Legendre, Paducah, KY and Cheryl (Matt) Honoree, Terrytown, LA.
Rev. Coyner also leaves a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
His daughters are ever thankful for the loving care his faithful son-in-law, David Nohra, provided for him over the last seven years.
The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer's Association Mississippi Chapter.
