Mrs. Dorothy Stevens Rogers, 95, of Clinton died September 22 at Brookdale Senior Living in Clinton, Mississippi. She grew up in New Castle, KY, and had lived in Clinton since 1955. She received her Bachelors degree in Library Science and Masters degree in Guidance Counseling from Mississippi College. She was a junior high librarian at Whitton Junior High, cheerleader sponsor and taught Old and New Testament at Woodland Hills Baptist Academy, and a guidance counselor at Clinton High School until she retired in 1993. Dorothy had a deep love for teenagers and enjoyed every conversation with her students. Many of her students would tell her, even years later, how impactful she was on their lives. She was never too busy to have a conversation and would welcome students to sit in her office anytime.
Dorothy began studying Elementary Education at the University of Kentucky, where she also pledged Kappa Delta sorority. Her education was abruptly interrupted with the war, and she returned home by request of the superintendent to teach school. While visiting her cousin in Louisville, she met William Stevens whom she married. Upon first moving to Clinton, she was a very active member of the Faculty Wives at Mississippi College. She was a founding member of the Intertribal Counsel at MC for the girls' tribes. In the 1980's while a guidance counselor at Clinton High School, she helped start the show choir Attaché, and continued to have a very active role with them by traveling to competitions with them by traveling to competitions with them. Dorothy was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton for 65 years, and for many years she taught and helped with the eleventh and twelfth grade Sunday School class. She was also a member of the Walter Leake chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and the Clinton Study Club. She was in charge of programs for both of those clubs for numerous years, one memorable theme was studying the National Parks system of the United States. An avid student, Dorothy never quit learning and believed in education. Being a mother to three boys, she enjoyed attending all of their sports activities, and continued to follow sports all her life, especially UK basketball.
She is preceded in death by her first husband Dr. William Stevens, her second husband Shelby Rogers, and great grandson Wyatt Ivy. She is having a beautiful reunion in Heaven rejoicing with each of them. Survivors include her three sons, Dr. William (Pat) Stevens III of Fort Collins, CO; David (Billie) Stevens of Clinton, MS; and Dr. John (Sue) Stevens of Flora, MS; 8 grandchildren, Cali (Ken) Atkinson, Robin (Jeremy) Gates, Kate (Kirk) DePriest, Becky (Andy) Flink, Jill (David) Clayton, David (Mary Beth) Stevens, Rob (Tiffany) Stevens, and Laura (Ron) Ivy; and 21 great grandchildren, Taryn Atkinson, Mikayla (David) Fine, Emmi Gates, Cade Gates, Hallie Ann Gates, Cole DePriest, Eli DePriest, Benjamin DePriest, Kassidy DePriest, Hudson Flink, Jack Flink, Barrett Flink, JP Flink, Lottie Flink, Linley White, Clayton White, Presley Stevens, Taylor Stevens, Moxon Stevens, Nix Stevens, and Walker Ivy. Dorothy or "Mimi" as she was better known, was so proud of her large family, especially since she was an only child. She loved to be surrounded by her family and friends, and share stories and memories with them.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning September 26, 2020 with visitation beforehand at 9:00 at First Baptist Church in Clinton, MS.
