Obituary

David Lee Roberts traded his earthly home, for his heavenly home, on March 10, 2024.

David is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Anita Renee' Roberts, son, James Michael Roberts (Cindy), daughter, Angela Roberts Wiggins (Joe), and grandchildren, Brittany Roberts Davis (Adam), Daniel Roberts, and Jessica Wiggins, and great granddaughter, Katherine Davis. He is also survived by brothers, Jerrald Roberts (Cheryl), and William Roberts (Carol), and by brother-in-law Alvin Anderson, sister-in-law, Kathy Anderson, and brother-in-law Craig Hurst, many nieces and nephews, and by his beloved cat, Kit.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Leo and Annie Marie Roberts, and his sister Bonnie Roberts Hurst.

He was born on March 5, 1941 in McClain, MS. He graduated from McClain High School in 1959 where he was recruited by the FBI. After graduation he moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as a clerk for the FBI until 1963 when he transferred to the Birmingham, Alabama field office. He worked on several high-profile cases during his tenure there. During this time, he met and married, his adoring wife, Renee' Roberts. In 1969 David moved his family to Miami, Florida, to begin a career in construction with Goff Steel Erectors, where he remained until 1976, when he moved with the company to Clinton, Mississippi. In 1999 he hung up his hard-hat and began a new career with MS Emergency Management, where he spent time traveling the state as a Special Project Officer for disaster recovery operations. After retiring briefly in 2007, he returned to work for FEMA on an as-needed basis, working disasters around the country.  He was appointed a Kentucky Colonel by the state of Kentucky for his disaster recovery work in that state.

David also served his country as a member of the 890th National Guard Engineering Group in Hattiesburg, MS where he earned the rank of Captain, and the 31st Dixie Division Military Police in Birmingham, Alabama, as an aid-de-camp to General Davis.

He was also a member of Wildwood Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years.

He was a devoted family man, who was happiest when his children and grandchildren were all together for a family meal. He enjoyed traveling and seeing new places. When he was at home, you would find him with a hot cup of tea in his hand, gospel or western music on the radio, or a John Wayne movie on tv. He will be greatly missed by all who had the honor to know him.

Visitation will be at Wildwood Baptist Church, 101 Auburn Dr., Clinton MS on Saturday, March 16 from 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM with memorial service to follow at 1:30.  Burial Service will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park, 6011 Clinton Blvd. Jackson, MS at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wildwood Baptist Church, 101 Auburn Dr., Clinton, MS or to the Gideons International.
