He attended Ole Miss on the GI Bill, graduating with a degree in accounting. Following his graduation, he began working for Buzz Morgan in Jackson as a bookkeeper where he was exposed to oil & gas landwork which led him to be hired by Dave Gammill who trained him to become a petroleum landman. He later worked for MidStates Oil Corporation before venturing out as an independent oil man. Mr. Miller trained many young landmen who went on to have long, successful careers. He loved scouting and was a Cub Master and later the Scout Master of Troop 315 at Briarwood Methodist Church. He served for many years on the Eagle Scout Board of Review. In addition, he helped organize and teach a course on title work at Mississippi College School of Law and was instrumental in acquiring a well derrick from Tinsley Field and having it moved and displayed at the Mississippi Agricultural Museum as part of the MAPL 50 th anniversary celebration.
