Mr. Charles Butler, 89, beloved family man, died Wednesday October 8, 2014 in Clinton. Visitation will be Saturday October 11, 2014 from 9:00 am until the 11:00 am service all at the First United Methodist Church in Clinton. Burial will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Butler was born in Jackson to William Raiford and Hattie Sanders Butler, August 22, 1925, the third of 8 children. After high school he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Nevada in the Pacific from 1944 to 1946. He was one of the last survivors that served on that ship.
He was a Gideon for many years, speaking in churches and giving out bibles to many in need, a member of the North Jackson Exchange Club where he served as a past president and was named in 1971 and 2013 as Exchangite of the year, a former member of Briarwood United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities, one being lay leader and was a current member of First United Methodist Church in Clinton where he sang with the senior choir. He was also involved with Cursillo and Kairos Prison ministry.
He worked many years in sales. After retirement he and his wife served many years as volunteers at MS Methodist Rehab Center and CMMC, assisting patients and always with a cheery greeting and a kind word. They also enjoyed traveling to see the world at home and abroad.
He is survived by his wife 59 years, Betty 3 children, daughters Carol Kamjou Khosro of Los Angeles and Mary Medlock Buddy of Denham Springs, LA his son, Martin Annette of Clinton, MS a sister, Rosalind Ross of Madison two brothers, Joe Betty of Daphne, AL and Gene Jan of Henderson, NV along with 6 grandchildren, Sara, Anahita, Kamran, Landi, Soheila and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Billy, Bobby, Beverly, sister Mary and granddaughter Tara.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 100 Mt. Salus Road, Clinton, MS 39056 or a memorial of your choice.
