Obituary

Clyde Elmer Black, Jr. was born on Nov. 19, 1942, in Savannah, GA to Clyde Elmer and Sallie Lucille (Brown) Black; the second child in a family of three children. Elmer grew up in Savannah, GA and Columbia, SC. Elmer was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints on Dec.3, 1950 and remained a faithful member of the church all his life. After graduation from Columbia High School in 1961, he enlisted in the Air Force and served as an air traffic control radar repairman. After four years in the Air Force, he served for two years as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints in the California mission. He fell in love with Doris Cartmell and married her in the Los Angeles Temple on Dec. 23, 1967. Elmer graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1970. Elmer and Doris were blessed with a daughter, Marjorie, in 1971. After his graduation, Elmer began working in the insurance industry and worked for Farm Bureau Insurance until his retirement in 2006.
Throughout his life, Elmer served in many church callings including bishop, stake president, Area Seventy and temple president of the Memphis Tennessee Temple. Elmer was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time with family and friends and serving others. Elmer is survived by is wife, Doris; as well as his daughter Marjorie (Carter) Hyatt, and 3 grandchildren: Spencer (Jasmine), Rachel, and Jacob. He is also survived by his brother Talbert Black (Gloria) and many nieces and nephews. Elmer will always be revered by his family, as a son who adored his parents, a faithful brother, a dedicated husband to Doris, a darling father and grandfather, and a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

Visitation will be held at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton on Thursday, Sept. 2 from 6 - 8 PM. The funeral will be held on Friday, Sept. 3 at 11 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A brief visitation will also be held from 10 to 10:30 AM at the church prior to the funeral.
