Billy James Curtis, 82, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at his home in Learned, MS. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26 2024 at Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Learned with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. before the service. A graveside service will follow at Old Lebanon Church Cemetery.
Billy was born on August 20, 1941, in Claiborne County. He graduated from Utica High School in 1959 and from Hinds Community College in 1961 and received his B.S. from Mississippi State University in 1963. He served two years on active duty in the U.S. Army, and he was stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and Madigan General Hospital in Seattle, Washington. He was honorably discharged January 31, 1970.
Billy married Anne Stewart Gibbes on June 8, 1969. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service in Kosciusko, Bay Springs, and Hattiesburg. He worked in the Real Estate Division for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in Vicksburg until retiring in 1993. With his time off, he enjoyed being a farmer, cattleman, gardener, and grandfather. Billy was a strong supporter of Rebul Academy. He served as President of the Rebul Academy Board of Directors for several years. Billy was a member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Learned.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Alston Lamar Curtis and Florence Davis Curtis. He was also preceded by his siblings L.C., Dick, Clyde, Jessie, Edith, Verna, Dorothy, and Bobbie.
Billy is survived by his wife, Anne Stewart Gibbes; his four sons, James Lake (Davida), Jeffrey Gibbes (Heather), Trent Eugene (Anna), and Alston Lamar; his six grandchildren: Madison Marie, Ainslie Anne, Macie Claire, Laken Louise, Hutton James, and Noah Monroe; and his two sisters, Margie and Shirley.
The family is grateful for the wonderful care received by Baptist Hospice (nurse: Tamika and nurse aid: Odnetta).
