Billie Jean Barnett
March 13, 1938 – March 22, 2025
Funeral services for Billie Jean Barnett, of Jackson, will be held on Friday, March 28, 2025, at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton, Mississippi. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m.
Born on March 13, 1938 in Noxapater, MS to Bill & Margaret Covington, where she was raised and went to school. Jean moved to Jackson at a young age where she lived a life of strength, service, and joy -- a woman who made every space she entered warmer, every community she joined stronger, and every person she encountered feel seen. Jean definitely left an undeniable mark on Downtown Jackson. Jean died peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the age of 87 in Jackson.
For more than 48 years, Jean served as an apartment manager at Sterling Towers in Downtown Jackson. It's downtown location and proximity to the law school brought her into contact and a part of the daily lives of elected officials, professionals, innumerable law students, and people from all walks of life. Jean offered guidance, compassion, and the kind of steady presence that turned a rented apartment into a true home.
Each Christmas season, residents eagerly anticipated her legendary Christmas parties—brimming with Jean's signature hospitality, warmth, and a heavy hand of sparkle, and her prized Bourbon Punch. Jean also delighted in catering weddings and parties, always ready to lend a hand to make life's special moments just a bit more magical. Jean was a true Southern Belle and was a superb hostess.
In her earlier years, Jean was a proud marathon "walker". That same endurance and spirited determination would define her life, including courageous battles with breast & lung cancer. She proudly wore breast cancer awareness brooches and bracelets as symbols of her resilience and advocacy.
Jean's commitment to service extended far beyond her professional work. For many years, she volunteered with the Junior Miss pageant, mentoring young women and helping them cultivate skills for life. She also contributed significantly to the Miss Mississippi pageant, coaching and guiding contestants with grace, warmth, and an eye for presence and poise.
Jean was a member of Highland Baptist Church for over 50 years. She loved serving in any way asked of her. She especially loved attending Sunday School and cooking for the church on Wednesday nights.
Jean was a long-standing member of the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM), where she volunteered at the organization's annual golf tournament year after year—often found with a welcoming smile at the hole-in-one station. Her contributions were formally recognized in 2013 when she was awarded the prestigious Accredited Residential Manager (ARM) of the Year.
Jean's life was full of color and character, and her final wishes were no exception. Her headstone simply reads "Billie Jean"—a nod to her independence and humor.
She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, perseverance, and joy. Jean will be deeply missed by her sister Becky Covington, of Jackson, and extended family, friends, former residents, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a Fund set up for her sister, Becky. Donations can be sent to Compere's Funeral Home 865 North St. Jackson, MS. 39202, and in the Memo, write Rebecca Covington Fund.
