Betty Jane
Hillman (Lewis) Adcock
October 7, 1933 – January 31, 2023
Betty Jane Hillman (Lewis) Adcock, 89, of Clinton and Bolton, Mississippi, passed away on Tuesday, January 31. Betty was born on October 7, 1933 to Robert and Odell Hillman, in Neshoba County, Mississippi. The youngest of ten siblings, she grew up in the Bebetter Community and graduated from Union High School. In 1951, Betty met and married Joseph W. Lewis, a wonderful man from Dixon, Mississippi. Betty and Joe went on to have three children; Robert, Jana (Ethridge), and Lynda (Bonner). Like all of her contemporaries in the "Greatest Generation" she and her siblings grew up in challenging times, including the Great Depression and World War II. The hard lessons Betty learned from her childhood about family and personal integrity were part of her character as she always put others ahead of herself, especially her children and family. Betty loved family gatherings of which she hosted hundreds over the years. She always knew how to make family and friends comfortable in her home or even in someone else's home. She was an excellent cook, her specialty being old style country cooking, of the kind that leaves memories of a special time and place for the rest of your life. She raised her children to work hard and value the importance of family and friends. She was always on the phone reaching out to her children, siblings, nieces, nephews, and friends trying to provide encouragement and support. She made it a point to understand the trials, tribulations, and joys that her loved ones were experiencing. Betty was practically a lifelong member of the Van Winkle United Methodist Church where she was one of the pillars that made the church a haven for so many. She ran the church thrift store for many years providing affordable goods to many in the area. She was always one of the first ones to volunteer for any worthy cause. Betty loved gardening and had plenty of fresh vegetables every year. Betty was predeceased by her mother and father; her first husband and father of her children Joseph Welborn Lewis; her second husband Ray Adcock; her six brothers: Bill Hillman, Dub Hillman, George Hillman, Robert "Junior" Hillman, Jim Hillman and Ceacel Hillman; and three sisters: Ann Davidson, Katherine Olsen and Marge Reagan. She is survived by her children Bobby (Rachael Richardson), Jana Ethridge (Clark) and Lynda Bonner (Mark), grandchildren Travis Lemco, Amy Lemco, Jill Brown (Anthony), Jamie Bufkin (Justin), Tracy Ethridge, Robin Ethridge, Tripp Ethridge (Amy Haidlinger), Joseph Bonner (Calli) and Amanda Tomaszewski (Tim Yates) and 13 great grandchildren. The family would like to recognize and thank Betty's sitters CC Nash, Mary Warren, Shantreal Marshall and Gwen Shelby. These wonderful women took excellent care of her while she was residing at Lynda's home during the last years of her life. They became family and are loved by all of us. Services will be held at Van Winkle United Methodist Church on February 4 at 11:00 am with visitation at 10:00 am. Graveside service will be at 2:30 pm at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Union, MS. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Van Winkle United Methodist Church, 3810 Robinson Road, Jackson, MS 39209.
