Obituary

Betty Nell Martin Butler, 87, beloved mother, wife, community member, died Saturday,
March 3, 2018. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years,
Charles M. Butler. The celebration of her life is being held on Monday, March 5th at the
First United Methodist Church of Clinton. Burial will be at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Betty was born in Plain (Richland) MS to Ruth Hannon Martin and John William Martin on
August 3, 1930, the third of four children, and the only daughter. She was raised in the
area and got her first job at the Mississippi Children's Home Society after she finished
business school, where she worked as a secretary and was deeply moved as she met
the children and families as they went through the adoption process. While working there she was introduced to her future husband by an office matchmaker.

She reared three children in the Jackson area while working for the Middle Mississippi
Girl Scout Council. She spent much of her time there working on Girl Scout cookie sales.
She spent many hours tirelessly going to school events, sports events, music lessons,
dance lessons, girl and boy scout events, vacation bible school, many Sunday school and church events, and choir practices with her children. She was always there.

One of Betty's favorite activities was gardening. She was in a garden club for many
years and spent many pleasurable hours in her yard tending to her flowers. She was a
long-time member of the Briarwood Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school
among many other activities. In her later years, she and her husband, Charles, became
members of the First United Methodist Church in Clinton. Betty loved teaching Sunday
school to the children. She was active in numerous other church organizations including
Cursillo and Kairos prison ministry for which she baked many delicious chocolate chip
cookies.

Betty worked with the Girl Scouts until her retirement in 1995 when she began volunteering with her husband at the Methodist Rehab Center and CMMC. She also went on many traveling adventures with her husband and other relatives. Betty loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren whenever she got the chance.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charles and her
granddaughter Tara. She is survived by her three children Carol (Khosro), Mary, and Martin
(Annette), six grandchildren Sara, Anahita, Kamran, Soheila and Landi, and nine great-
grandchildren.
