Barry Burleigh
Aden
August 1, 1939 – September 3, 2022
Dr. Barry Burleigh Aden, of Jackson, MS, died on Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday September 9, 2022, at Northminster Baptist Church, 3955 Ridgewood Road, Jackson, with visitation in the Great Hall beginning at 1:00. The service will begin at 3:00 in the Sanctuary with inurnment to follow in the Columbarium at Northminster.
Barry was born on August 1, 1939, to Dr. Aubrey Anslem Aden and Anne Pocahontas Goodman Aden in Yazoo City, MS. He grew up in Indianola, MS, where he graduated from Indianola High School in 1957. He was Senior Class President, Mr. IHS, Most Handsome, and an all around athlete.
He graduated from Tulane University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, then went to The University of Mississippi School of Medicine graduating in 1964. He completed a residency in Anesthesia also at UMMC in 1968. That same year, he joined Jackson Anesthesia Associates with whom he practiced for 40 years.
He spent the majority of his years practicing at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center and River Oaks Hospital. He loved the practice of anesthesia because it fit his quiet, kind, and compassionate personality so well. Very often, patients personally requested that he provide their anesthesia when they were having surgery.
In the early 1970's, Barry and one of his partners, Dr. Ralph Dunn, along with cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Tom Kilgore, were instrumental in starting the cardiovascular program at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. He was a founding member of The Guardian Society of the University of Mississippi Foundation whose motto is "protecting the future of the School of Medicine." He served as Chairman of The Guardian Society from 1991-1992. He was also a member of the 1955 Legacy Society which was established in 2015 to honor and recognize special friends who have either funded or planned a deferred gift in support of The University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Barry was a member of Northminster Baptist Church and The Mary Foose Sunday School Class. For many years he could be seen at the Sanctuary doors serving as an usher and welcoming worshipers. It was not unusual to see his four daughters ushering with him.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends as well as scuba diving in the waters around Bonaire. But, what he really enjoyed was reading and could often be found in his favorite chair in the sunroom at home with a book in his hands.
Barry was married to his love Carolyn Donnell Aden. On July 28 of this year, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Together, they raised four daughters. When told that he was a good father his response was, "It was mostly due to their mother." He was often heard saying, "I love my girls."
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gordon Goodman Aden. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and their daughters, Anne Russell Aden Bradley (Dr. Scott) of Columbus, MS, Leigh Aden Box (Mike) of Jackson, MS, Katherine Aden Rhodes (Patrick) of New Braunfels, TX, Barrie Aden Mahaffey (Dr. Eddie) of Brandon, MS, and his grandchildren, Aden Marie Burchak, Coleman Joseph Mahaffey, Andrew Lamar Mahaffey, and Nicholas Gordon Mahaffey. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. William Mangum Aden, II (Joy) of Ridgeland, MS, his sister-in-law, Betty Allen Aden of Greenwood, MS, one nephew, five nieces, and their children.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Northminster Baptist Church.
