Barbara Mashburn Mayo, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, child of God, passed away surrounded by family on June 27, 2018. She was born on October 13, 1947 in Vicksburg, MS to James C. Mashburn and Marvis M. Mashburn. She spent her childhood in Bolton, MS. She leaves behind many cousins, an Aunt and Uncles she adored. Her sister Jamie was her very best friend next to her husband Will.
She is survived by her husband Will; her children James Mayo and his wife Leigh Anne, Emily Sheppard and her husband Brent; Emily's two daughters and James' two sons were her joy and her heart. She was our constant.
She was a member of the class of 1965. She was Homecoming queen and was a cheerleader at Raymond High School where she met lifelong friends. This is where she met the love of her life. They would have celebrated 49 years of marriage on July 5th.
She graduated from Mississippi State College for Women in 1969 and had a short career in public education before taking time off to rear her children. She returned to the workforce later in life, working at Hinds Community College and later at Nissan Corporation doing leadership training. She happily left the workforce to welcome her grandchildren and to actively be a part of their life.
During her retirement she enjoyed teaching young women's Bible study and being involved in many ministries with First United Methodist Church in Canton. She absolutely loved cooking for her family and made every visitor feel like they were family. She also drove a racecar for her birthday at Talladega raceway. She would want you to know this.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018 from 5 to 7pm at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Raymond. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 2pm at First United Methodist Church in Canton with visitation beginning at noon. Graveside services will follow at Raymond Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the many nurses and doctors at St. Dominic's Hospital for their compassionate care during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Methodist Children's Homes of Mississippi, 805 North Flag Chapel Road, Jackson, MS 39209.
