Obituary

Dr. A. J. "Jack" Glaze, Jr., 94, of Clinton, MS, died September 4, 2018 at the VA Nursing Home in Kosciusko, MS.

Born in D'Lo, MS on January 17, 1924, Glaze was the son of the late A. J. Glaze and Mabel Pickering Glaze of Pelahatchie, MS.

Glaze was a student at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, when World War II began. He enlisted in the Army and served in Northern Africa and Western Europe as a Chaplain's Assistant. After the war he completed his undergraduate work at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS and graduate studies at Southern Baptist Seminary, Louisville, KY, where he also later completed his Ph.D. studies. At Seminary, he met and married Jean Johnson of Greenwood, SC. Together they gave a lifetime of Christian service through pastorates, international missions, seminary teaching and administration, counseling, mentoring and long-lasting friendships in Argentina and the US.

A Southern Baptist missionary, he served with the denomination's Foreign Mission Board (1953-80) in Argentina as Professor of Old Testament and President (1967-75) of the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Buenos Aires. A Hebrew scholar and biblical expositor, Glaze was the author of "Jonah" in The Broadman Bible Commentary and also other English and Spanish language commentaries and articles.

While on furloughs from assignment in Argentina, Glaze served as Guest Professor at Southern Baptist Seminary, Louisville, KY and Mid-Western Baptist Seminary, Kansas City, MO. Upon his return to the United States, Glaze served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Religion, Mississippi College, Clinton, MS (1980-85) and later as the Chester L. Quarles Professor of Missions, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, New Orleans, LA (1985-93). He was instrumental in starting several Hispanic churches. Following his retirement, Glaze continued to share his passion for the Bible teaching Seminary Extension courses in churches and numerous informal Bible studies at his home.

He was an exemplary father, grandfather, great-grandfather, pastor, Bible scholar, seminary professor, church planter, teacher, author, mentor, counselor, fisherman and friend. He loved God and wanted everyone to experience the peace and joy that come from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Through his students and lives he touched, people around the world have come to know Christ as Savior.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Johnson Glaze of Greenwood, SC, and his sister Margaret Glaze Ross of Pelahatchie, MS.

He is survived by his children: David Glaze (Gloria) of Brandon, MS; Steve Glaze (Ruth) of Lynchburg, VA; Deb Wells (Keith) of Philadelphia, MS; and Tim Glaze (Laurie) of Hattiesburg, MS; twelve grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
