Obituary

Alfred "Fred" Lee Price passed away peacefully at his home  surrounded by his family and loved ones at the age of 88 on June 17, 2023. He is now with Lord.

Born in 1935 to Dewey and Dorothy Price in Little Rock, AR, Fred graduated from Central High School and attended Hendrix College, where served as the school mascot. He now has a scholarship at the school in his name.

After college, Fred secured a position with Petroleum Helicopters in New Orleans, LA as the office manager, and liaison for the company's global accounts. He travelled around the world negotiating contracts  for the company and its subsidiary Offshore Navigation (precursor to GPS). Fred also graduated with a J.D. from the Tulane University School of Law while working for Petroleum Helicopters. Upon graduation he became the associate corporate counsel.

As part of his work with Petroleum Helicopters (PHI) Fred had the opportunity to go to Colombia to manage PHI's operations in the country's developing oil industry. Prior to the arrival of PHI,  equipment for exploration of the oil deposits in the country travelled by mules. His work in Colombia helped to increase the pace of exploration with modern technology. While in Colombia, Fred also met and married the love of his life, his wife of 65 years, Mayita.

Fred sought out a greater challenge and accepted a position as General Counsel for First Mississippi Corporation (FMC).  He implemented the corporate acquisition strategy for the company and pursued litigation that successfully recovered millions for FMC. While at FMC Fred also served as the Chairman of the Mississippi Economic Council, where he worked tirelessly to pass tort reform in the state. He was summoned for an enthusiastic debate at a committee hearing with John Grisham. Despite Mr. Grisham's opposing views on the matter, Fred remained an avid collector of all of his novels.

Fred also served as the Chairman of the Legislative Affairs committee of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, President of the Rankin County YMCA, and as Commissioner of the Mississippi Employment Security Commission. He worked for many years as an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau and the American Arbitration Association. His was a member of the Mississippi, Louisiana, and Federal Bar Associations, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court

He was a fervent advocate for Mississippians with arthritis. As the Chairman of the MS Arthritis Foundation he led fundraising and advocacy efforts, along with volunteering each year at the Barksdale Annual Golf Tournament for the Foundation.

Beyond his professional work, Fred was also a champion of humor, bringing fresh jokes to every meeting of his various clubs, Sunday school classes, and social gatherings. His vibrant attitude and glowing personality brightened every room he entered. He always had a kind word for everyone, and his love of philately was seconded only by his love of the Lord. He was a true testament to his faith, and never let anything, like his rheumatoid arthritis or multiple battles with cancer, stand in the way of putting everyone else before himself. His legacy will live on through the positive effects of his work, his charity, and the example he set for others.

He is survived by his wife Mayita, his sister Dewana, and his children Ana Maria and Greg, his grandchildren, Alexander Lebl, Mary Katherine Price, and Jason Price.
