It is with heavy hearts that we announce that on Saturday, May 23, 2020, Alfred Anthony DeMauro, loving husband, father of two children, three step-children, and beloved grandfather, went to be with Jesus at the age of 88. He died peacefully, under the compassionate care of the employees of Hospice Ministries, surrounded by his friends and family.
Alfred, better known as "Tony", was a loving husband of 39 years to his wife Jackie, an excellent father to his daughter, Karen Abdeen (Eddie) and son, Robert "Bob" DeMauro, step-father to Kathy Newman, Noma Gillis, Kenny Griffin, a wonderful grandfather to Chris Abdeen Natasha), Corey Abdeen (Lindsey), Tim Griffin, Josh Griffin, Jason Griffin (Vanessa), Nina Savoie (Joseph), Meg Newman, Hunter Newman (Misty), and Kayla Gillis, and great grandfather to numerous great grandchildren, who dedicated many years of his life to hard work, helping others, and in service to his faith and membership at Raymond Road Baptist Church.
The son of Italian immigrants, he learned to develop mental toughness and character growing up in post-great depression era New Jersey. Alfred went on to serve with honor in the United States Navy, an experience that allowed him to travel the world, honor the nation he was so proud to be a part of, and that he is quoted as saying, "was perhaps the best time of his life." Alfred retired from a productive and fulfilling career at Universal Manufacturing of Patterson, NJ and Gallman, MS, after many years of dedicated service as a plant manager.
He was born on April 20, 1932, to Salvatore and Theresa DeMauro in Patterson, New Jersey. He is preceded in death by his parents, his six siblings, and his great grandson, John Harris Savoie.
Alfred is survived by his lovely wife, Jackie DeMauro, his daughter, Karen Abdeen (Eddie), son, Robert (Bob) DeMauro; step-children, Kathy Newman, Noma Gillis and Kenny Griffin; grandchildren Chris Abdeen (Natasha), Corey Abdeen (Lindsey), Tim Griffin, Josh Griffin, Jason Griffin (Vanessa), Nina Savoie (Joseph), Meg Newman, Hunter Newman (Misty), and Kayla Gillis, and his numerous nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren.
Known for his amazing talent as a chef of authentic Italian cuisine, his thirst for knowledge, especially in the areas of US History, science, and engineering, his passion for the outdoors, especially fishing, and for his love of the music of Willie Nelson, Frank Sinatra, the Italian opera, and various other artists he simply referred to as, "Old School".
Alfred will always be remembered for his fierce independence, great mental and physical strength, ardent loyalty to his family and friends, and his fearlessness in always letting those that he cared for know exactly what was on his mind and what he thought about things. He was truly one-of-a-kind, a great man, a role model, and he will be deeply, deeply, missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
